The automated process of pulling key data (amount, date, vendor) from receipt images or emails.
Receipt extraction is the automated process of identifying and pulling structured data from receipts, whether they arrive as scanned images, PDFs, or email messages. Key data points include the vendor name, transaction date, total amount, tax, payment method, and individual line items.
How Receipt Extraction Works
Modern receipt extraction combines multiple technologies. For image-based receipts, OCR first converts the visual content to text. Then, natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning models analyze the text to identify and categorize specific data fields. For email receipts, extraction algorithms parse HTML templates and identify data patterns common to transactional emails.
The challenge with receipt extraction is the enormous variety of formats. Every retailer, restaurant, and service provider has their own receipt layout. AI-powered extraction systems are trained on millions of examples to handle this diversity, but accuracy varies — the best systems achieve 95%+ accuracy on common formats.
